LEICA X (Typ113) | SHOOTING REPORT
This new premium compact model is called the "X" and it's the high-end model of the X series. The new X, as well as the X1/X2, has a lens with the angle of view equivalent to 35mm in 35mm format, but it's the prime Summilux f1.7 23mm, which is the fastest among the fixed-lens cameras with APS-C sensor. So, it's hard not to expect high image quality from this model. Yes, they only changed the max aperture and didn't change the angle of view. And, I can feel Leica's unwavering concept of this series.

Let's start with a shot wide open. As expected, just one glance is enough to realize the high optical performance of the lens. At the same time, I feel the JPEG images have higher saturation. But, since this is a comparison to the X2 producing very "sober" images, maybe I should say "it has been standardized" to be more accurate. Yet, it's never overly colorful and contrasty, meaning it's still very Leica. So, I'm sure many people will find it natural and easy to use. And, if you prefer "that color" of the predecessors, rest assured. You can always get it by selecting "neutral" of the "film modes" in the menu.
The smooth increase of bokeh at this distance is something that can only be realized by this model. It's sharp wide open and the straight lines are captured as they are. The well-corrected distortion makes me want to keep shooting wide open. The user interface follows the predecessors', so you can still change aperture with one dial. This intuitive operation is also one of the appeals of the X series.
"Even though I couldn't get the sure feeling of successful shooting at the scene, I'm always surprised by the image quality when I see the images on the PC screen." I often here such voices from X series users. And, the image quality of the new X is more shiny and romantic. Plus, the tonal gradation is wonderful. The lens is a bit larger, but it's still a small camera and easy to handle.
The X series has been used by many Leica users including those who focus manually. The AF speed has become far more practical than the predecessor and the same goes for the overall operation. So, you can use it without feeling stress. By saying it, I may sound like saying the predecessors were slow... well, they weren't quick. :p
The 20cm minimum focus distance is great. And, there's no need to switch to macro mode to shoot from close distance. So, you can switch to table photography seamlessly. The natural back bokeh and the short focus distance make the subject stand out. By the way, the max aperture at the minimum focus distance is preset to F2.8 and I guess it is to maintain the image quality. Although it doesn't tell the exact distance, it appears to slow down automatically from around 70-80cm.
I shot the beautiful instrument panel and was able to capture it just as it is. The short focus distance is convenient for shooting in a narrow space as well as shooting close-up photography. And, I think this is an essential element of a camera with a fixed focal lens.
Another close-up shot of the buckles in different shapes. They all look realistic and solid.
The appearance follows the basic design of the X series, although it has the larger lens. The shape without waste portions is very Leica and it's so inviting. Such a design is timeless and you will want to use it for a long time.
The simple user interface, including the two dials for shutter speed and aperture, is unchanged, while the addition of the movie button on the right of the shutter button is a big change. We didn't have time to shoot movies this time, but I guess the Full HD movie shooting capability will be in handy in a variety of situations.
The elegant silver model has brown leatherette. Which color would you like?
Superior quality. Always in your pocket.
If we want a portable camera that generates high image quality, we actually don't have many choices. And, even though you don't want to carry big luggage or a heavy camera, you may still want to bring a high-quality camera with you. The Leica X is a camera for adult connoisseur because of the image quality, handling, and design. And, the fast operation as well as the prime lens must appeal to the existing X-series users, too. Not only it will come in handy in limited lighting conditions, but also the short minimum focus distance will expand shooting opportunities. So, even Leica M users should find the new X useful because there're scenes hard to capture with the M cameras and they are not as portable as the X. Just like choosing a fountain pen, take you time considering this superior quality product, as I'm sure there're scenes you can capture only because you always have it with you.
