LEICA D-LUX (Typ109)|SHOOTING REPORT
The new D-LUX is a dream premium compact camera from Leica because it has everything we want for a compact camera: a large sensor and the fast zoom lens. It's not hard to imagine the rich image quality generated by the large 4/3-inch sensor. And, the "VARIO-SUMMILUX F1.7-2.8/10.9-34 ASPH." zoom lens covers the standard range equivalent to 24-57mm in 35mm format. And furthermore, it has the elegant Leica look. So, it's a solid choice for someone who is looking for a high quality compact camera. Now, let's check the image quality of the JPEG outputs generated straight from the camera.

Leica is also a "coachbuilder" of camera bodies. The smart shape without needless decorations highlights the red Leica badge and it's simply good-looking. When I dress up with a well-cut suit, I'd like to carry a camera like this one.
It reproduced the rich tonal gradation of the sunshine filtered through the leaves. The high clarity and contrast worked to depict the pure air.
The short minimum focus distance and the zoom-in capability up to 75mm expand shooting opportunity. For example, you can shoot a table photo like this one without standing up. After capturing the chef's work smartly, it's time to eat!
Each rope looks very sharp and I'm amazed that a compact camera generates such high image quality. The 24mm wide-end includes the entire scene in front of you and it's so versatile. Even if the lens isn't long enough, we can always crop. But, we cannot widen narrow images.
Leica's image tuning has become more neutral these days and the same goes the X series. Yet, it's sober than Japanese brands. As our crew who went to Germany said, the light is different over there. And, it's natural that the philosophy of imaging is different, too. I personally think Leica's tuning suits cloudy sky and dark rainy scenes.
By using telephoto range, you can capture the subject's shape more naturally. The texture of the gilt looks wonderful.
It's so portable. Yet, it's great for landscape and portraits. This is a perfect camera for traveling. If it were slightly thinner, it could go inside the pocket. But, this size is just right to handle and we should enjoy the speed of the zoom lens.
It captures the mood very well and I can feel the distance to the mountains as well as the car. This 3D quality is due to the large sensor.
How is your red-leaves photography going this year? You don't always have to go to the distant famous spots because you can also feel the season just around you. I shot this image around my feet at the wide-end. The resolution is high enough to separate each leaf.
The eyes look so sharp. The fast F1.7 wide-end lets you shoot in low light conditions and enjoy fair amount of bokeh.
Feel free to use this camera all day long!
The best equipment inside the bag
The more serious the photographers are, the smaller number of shots they take on a daily basis. This is because they are not satisfied with ordinary image quality. And, they want something that they can use and feel attached to for a long time. The D-LUX is the very camera for these people and it's a camera for adults.
Leica cameras are not fashion items. They are serious photographic tools with a timeless design. Most digital products become old in just 1 or 2 years after the release, and this situation makes us believe that the newest products are always the best. What Leica does in such a trend is so special. Once you step into the Leica world, you can get a peace of mind because you will rarely mind new products. You will make choices according to your taste rather than the functions and the specifications. You will value the excitement more than the efficiency and the cost-performance. The price may sound like something you have to stand on tiptoe. But, in the long run, is it really expensive when you can feel great every time you use it for years?
And, please remember. Even Leica M cameras can't replace the D-LUX.
