Since the X-E1 is targeted to those who prefer manual control, this Touit lens also has an aperture ring just like other FUJIFILM X lenses. As expected from the brand name, the X-E1 generates film-like pictures. Together with the high resolution lowpass-less sensor and the rich tonality, this lens outperforms other Carl Zeiss Planar lenses that I have ever used with films. I gather this lens was fine-tuned with the X-E1 because it was very easy to use. The X-E1 is a genuine camera that lets you take a full control of your shooting. You can trace the subject with the EVF and with the dials you can adjust the necessary elements without taking your eyes off it. Thus, just mounting this lens on this camera was already exciting enough.

  • This picture would become loose if it was taken with a lens without proper aberration corrections. The sharpness increases as you stop down, but it's sharp enough wide open.
  • Although I focused to the shadow on the road surface, I still wanted some outlines of the flowers. So, I stopped down one f-step. Still, the bokeh is round and has a good mood, don't you think?
  • Stopped down to F8. Astonishingly sharp and solid.
  • I wanted to check the front bokeh, so I stopped down a bit. I personally like this bokeh in this condition.
  • Focus peak is razor sharp, but the texture on the oil drum is very nice, too. The color is very rich and very Planar-like.
  • I just wanted to get more depth of field, and hey this is just great enough.
  • Sharp enough wide open. The Planar has a certain point where it produces peculiar bokeh depending on the distance to the background. It becomes round if you stop down a little. Also, the bokeh shape changes drastically when the distance to the background changes, but it is this trait that makes shooting fun. Anyway, the armrests are so realistic, aren't they?
  • Another shot wide open.
  • A shot at Kusatsu Hot Springs. Even though it was May, it was snowing! I was skeptical of the results wide open, but it's surprisingly sharp.
  • Another shot wide open. How beautiful the bokeh is!
  • I wanted to show that they are talking to each other, so I shot wide open by focusing to the man on the boat. The man in the front and the bridge in the back are out of focus. This would be hard if I used a lens with loose focus wide open.
  • The letters are so clear, unlike many large aperture lenses.
  • There are different tastes of bokeh, but this lens generates a massive one. I know people like different kinds of bokeh, but to me this lens creates a solid bokeh with increasing undefinition toward the background, while maintaining the massiveness.
  • For many years, the Zeiss lenses have maintained their specialty: rich tonality and high contrast. I guess this is only possible with elevated basic performance.
  • How do you like it?
