FUJIFILM X-A1 / SHOOTING REPORT

The X-A1 is the entry model in the Fujifilm's X camera lineup. It's almost the same as the X-M1 except for the conventional sensor with a Bayer patterned color filter, which contributed to reduce the price dramatically. Other X cameras seem to be targeted to advanced users because of the high-resolution X-Trans CMOS sensor without a low-pass filter, the high-quality XF lenses, the rich color reproduction unique to a film manufacturer, and the manual operation. The X-A1, on the other hand, is a friendly model for entry users. Yet, there's no difference in the number of pixels and the size of the sensor between them (16.3MP, APS-C). And, this large sensor is effective in realizing wider dynamic range and bigger bokeh. So, if you're looking for a mirrorless camera or a stylish compact camera, this maybe the best camera for you.

Except for the sensor, the specifications are almost the same as the X-M1 and the maximum shutter speed is 1/4000s. So, you can take advantage of the thin depth of field of the APS-C sensor by opening up the aperture even in the daytime. It wonderfully reproduced the water screen around the surfboard behind the splashes.

It realized nice contrast, while reproducing the tone between highlight and shadow. The moment I found the twinkling ocean through the train window, I was able to capture the scene thanks to the brisk AF. This high response is motivating.

Great texture reproduction of the backlit fabric. The transition from the sharp focal peak to the defocused parts is so natural.

Just like other X cameras, the high sensitivity performance is one of the best among mirrorless cameras out there. The above two images shot at ISO 1600 and ISO 3200 demonstrate that they can be used regularly. So, you can shoot in the night with more confidence.

At the original size, I can even recognize the fishing lines hanging from the rods and the ships off the coast.

The camera doesn't waste the sharpness of the high-quality XF lenses. It perfectly captured the waffle pattern of the wall as well as the window glasses sharply all the way to the back.

Because it only weighs 330g, it's a great camera for walking. You cannot shoot casually like this with a hefty set.

The large sensor captures the scene more impressively.

Always carry this camera. Enjoy life with photography.

The X-A1 doesn't carry all the cutting edge features of the other X bodies, but the image quality is uncompromised and this camera broadens the lineup of the premium X series. It's easy to handle and light. It looks just like a traditional camera and operates intuitively. The two machined metal dials on the top cover proves Fujifilm's sincerity in designing the best camera even though it's an entry model. As for the shooting functions, it not only supports face-detection AF and automatic scene modes, but also 8 artistic advanced filters including soft filter and toy camera and the film simulation modes which lets you change color reproduction just like when you switch films. After shooting, you can directly upload images via Wi-Fi connection with smartphones and tablet devices. So, you can do most things you want with this camera.

You'll love the looks, too. Just like the XF1, it comes in red, brown, and silver. This camera becomes a part of your fashion and you can enjoy coordinating. Maybe, even advanced users will want this camera because of this!

This is an attractive choice for those who want higher image quality or had been hesitated to get conventional SLR cameras. The X-lens lineup has a variety of high-performance lenses from ultra-wide angle to telephoto. Get them one by one, step by step, and enjoy the difference of world seen with different lenses. The X-A1 is a door to the deeper world.
