FUJIFILM X100 / SHOOTING REPORT

The X100's identities are "colors," "APS-C sensor," and "viewfinder." The colors are made by a film manufacturer. The sensor, which is large for a compact camera, generates rich and dense images. And, it has three viewfinders: EVF, OVF, and rear LCD. In addition, it features a 35mm equivalent fixed-focal lens. To be honest, I don't recommend fixed-focal lenses to just anybody because of the following reasons. First, it forces a photographer to compose by moving around. Second, the restriction of angle of view limits the flexibility in dealing with ever-changing scenes. In other words, the lens is difficult to master without acquiring "the eye of a 35mm." The 35mm angle of view is ideal for shooting a tow you have never been to and you no nothing about there. If you know you'll be shooting alleys, you'll pick a 28mm. If you know you'll be shooting particular subjects, you'll choose a 50mm. The 35mm helps you "find" what to shoot in the location. This means it can deal with many situations and this is why it's hard to master. Because of the retro-style, the unique colors and rendition, and the exclusive fixed-focal lens, this is the perfect camera for people who want to devote themselves into snapshooting and to shoot for expression beyond recording.

Thick color reproduction

The red color of the tomatoes looks dense and fresh. The bottles look realistic. The rounded old table looks warm. And, the sky blue under the direct sunshine is deep. This camera is motivating. The JPG images still have room for post-adjustment. In fact, if you adjust the tone-curve and contrast, they look even nicer.

The lens captures light beautifully.

At wide open, it's perfectly soft without being too soft. In other words, it's sharp enough. And, it becomes sharper by stopping down. It's interesting that the body filled with the latest technologies has this classical lens. I'm most impressed with its power to capture light beautifully. And, it works perfectly to realize the rich tone including the highlight holding. By the way, you can get really close to the subject with macro mode, although the rendition becomes very soft as in the image above. Of course, if you take advantage of it, you can shoot an image like the one below.

For someone who wants a compact high-quality camera providing high image quality

The X100 makes a difference with the unique hybrid viewfinder which can be switched according to the scene. Want high image quality, but don't want a hefty body? Want something you can always carry? Want a high quality camera that is a pleasure to own? Why don't you get the X100? The image quality can rival high-end cameras and it looks great around the neck or in the hand.
