Canon EOS Kiss X70 / SHOOTING REPORT

The EOS KISS X70 (aka EOS 1200D, EOS Rebel T5) is a good choice for someone who wants to start using a DSLR camera reasonably. While the predecessor X50 (aka EOS 1100D, EOS Rebel T3) had 12.2 megapixels, the X70 has 18 megapixels. Plus, the 2.7-inch (230,000 dots) rear LCD screen has been replaced with the larger 3-inch (460,000 dots) screen. As for the appearance, it has satin finished surface and the grip has the high quality rubber. With such updates, this model has raised the bottom level of the Canon's entry model lineup. And, it lets you enjoy the merit of the APS-C sensor. Now, let's check the image quality as well as its usability.

The increase of the number of pixels not only enabled minute capturing but also improved separation of edge lines from background as well as tonal gradation. It has a great balance between minuteness, contrast, and tonal depth. While many APS-C cameras from other companies have over 20 megapixels, Canon's entry models continue to have 18 megapixels. And, I think there must be some good reasons for that. Maybe, it realizes the best balance in the total performance represented by resolution, tonal reproduction, and high sensitivity performance. Just look at this image quality. I think it's excellent.

I shot over until the stone surface becomes white to emphasize the intense sunshine from right overhead. Even though the X70 is an entry model, it supports exposure compensation up to +/-5 steps, which is a great advantage.

The bokeh isn't large like the one by the full frame sensor, but large enough to enjoy the tasty bokeh.

Thanks to the high resolution, it depicts each hair. You can zoom the image on the LCD screen up to 10X, so you can check the focus as well as the details.

It resolves regardless of focus distance. Gradation of the blue tone is very smooth and it also realized the airy feel.

Despite the high contrast, the image has a good balance between the highlight and the shadow. The texture of the wood is well depicted.

More pixels. More convenient.

Thanks to the APS-C sensor, the images have a good depth. And, it now supports the aspect rations of 4:3, 16:9, and 1:1 in addition to the predecessor's original 2:3. Also, it has the "creative filter" which adds various types of effects to the images. These enjoyable filters include "grainy B/W," "soft focus," "fisheye effect," miniature effect," and "toy camera effect." Furthermore, it supports full HD movie, and I'm sure it's great for family use as well. So, even though this is an entry model, it's a versatile camera. In summary, the significant updates to the X50 have made the X70 an attractive choice to start taking beautiful photography with a DSLR camera.
